TommyTraveler from Cincinnati...
Sounds like you are referring to that ridiculous Joe Barton Blog called: "BARTON: Sending us back to 1875 - Reducing our carbon footprint". Nea?
Please remember, if that is the case...Barton's credentials are more than a bit suspect. HE IS SO FAR UP THE REAR OF BIG OIL HE CANNOT SEE OUT! I also believe Joe and the Texas Governor were in cahoots on the issue of Texas seceding from the Union recently. That didn't work out too well in 1865!
Can we get back to the issue of cancer causing gases from refineries?
Our future is alternative energy as other posters have already mentioned.

OilBGone From New Jersey...
We have had this discussion before. We were having a good, spirited discussion on Cancer causing gases from Refineries...and you had to spew!
The President's name is OBAMA without embellishment. You needn't agree with him, in fact that you don't IF you had a viable comment to make could make this thread more interesting.
However, as a citizen, you are one right?, you owe the office respect. The same basic stuff you learned at home. Your schoolyard puns belong with the boys in the schoolyard.
You can blow off the health risks of refineries all you want until you live near one. But it is easy to ignore other peoples tribulations and health issues if you can't see them.
Even OSHA regs regarding inhalants, has very strict rules on the wearing of personal protection equipment such as respirators when limits are higher than allowed, for example, benzene. Benzene is just one of the air-borne carcinogens from Oil refining. Google it, if you care.
The people who live in proximity of the refineries, particularly children can breath these deadly chemicals 24/7. And, come to think about it...don't wear respirators. But, you don't about their additional health-care costs, because you can't see them.
You really need to have first hand experience. Perhaps we can plop one of the big refineries from OK, TX, or LA right down in your neighborhood? Up for it?
Further, nothing has changed, same ruling that the previous admin signed as he was walking out the door....perhaps we should look into that! GAWD forbid if we cut into the obscene profits of BIG OIL.
Further, this is old news....last one was posted yesterday on GB.

dick57 -- I'm with you. I'm almost afraid of what President Obama has in store for us tomorrow, the next day, the day after that...with each passing day, he's coming up with new ways of raising our taxes. There's no way of telling how far he's willing to go before we find ourselves bankrupt and begging the Chinese for a bailout. President Obama is leading us down a path of insurmountable debt, with no end in sight!

We can't have these stupid costly regulations causing a drain on profits. Cancer-shmancer. O'Bummer must think this is a commie country...why is he trying to do this? He is ruining America, and we are being flushed down the toilet by him. We only have 6 months left now.*
*Disclaimer - I do not feel this way. I am just saving some of you dolts from having to type.

Is there more pollution from the refineries or from the coal burning power plants? Would we be better off improving the scrubbers at power plants than the emissions at refineries? I do not know the answer. Which is the bigger bang for the buck?

You mean my health will get better when the 4 or 5 refineries within 10 miles of where I, and perhaps 1 million other people, live will improve when they come into compliance?

According to the article American refinerys have spent $100 billion on reducing emissions since 1990. That's a lot of money. How much more will possible new regulations cost the refinerys that will be passed on to the consumers? How many jobs losses cascaded though our economy because of higher costs? The best thing for the environment is prosperity. Why is it that are Government is for making America less prosperous? And if you want real pollution, go visit China.

Wow... refining is already the rate-limiting step for gas production and now the Chosen One wants to make it even harder! Show me the numbers on those "carcinogens". If one of them is carbon dioxide, I'll puke.

Those who voted for change are getting just what they voted for. Steel mills and refineries ARE bad news. If you live near one or live in CA better start making plans to move before it's too late. I didn't hear much about CA today, maybe everybody starting to leave.

I live less than 2 miles from ConocoPhillips which is expanding its refining business to include the Alberta oil sands crude. I heard a few days ago that we were in one of the highest areas in Madison County, IL., for pollution from the steel mills and refineries. They should have tough standards to meet for clean air. If they want to shut down the refinery then maybe the government should take it over and see if they can do better. Might stop the manipulation of supply and gas prices.

I agree with the refineries, close it down and move operations to other countries that want business and manufacturing. I could go along with all this BS if China and India would but they both have said no way. Now they will take even more of our jobs. Good job Obama, and today you said you are very concerned about jobs in America - Straight up Liar!

If I understand what some folks are saying, who are against these measures: it is OK for Exxon and Valero (and the other GREEDY REFINERS who are GOUGING HUGE PROFITS while we struggle to make ends meet) to poison the air as long as the price of gasoline at the pump stays down?!?
The fact that they DO pump poisons into the air has to have a price the REFINERS must pay, and while we do feel that at the pump, I for one, would rather breathe clean air, pay a little more, and devote myself towards getting AWAY from the easy way of liquid petroleum-based fuels and SEEK ALTERNATIVES! Meanwhile, I'll CONSERVE, so the cost impact isn't felt so hard, and I'll DRIVE SMART so I use much less liquid petroleum-based fuel...

Who would even live near a refinery in the first place? With the NIMBY attitude ingrained into all of us, the refinery would not even be there in the first place.
